Warrants say Frits St. Louis, Jr., 22, of Raleigh, shot Kevin Royster, 48, while trying to steal his laptop.
Royster was transported by ambulance from a gas station at Millbrook Road and Atlantic Avenue just before 6 p.m. Friday.
Police say he was not shot at the gas station. Investigators believe the shooting may have happened nearby on Quail Forest Drive.
St. Louis is being held on drug, robbery, and assault charges. His bond is $270,000.
