Eyewitnesses tell ABC11 that a car suddenly lost control while driving down Chapanoke Road, causing it to drive through a soccer field and through a goal net before crashing into some trees.
Kellen Crosby said he and his mother ran over to the crash site and helped the driver and two women in the back seat out of the car. He said a person in the passenger seat appeared to have died at the scene.
"My mom had a tool, and she cut the seatbelt off the driver because the seat would not move, it's just jammed in there," Crosby explained. "We just did all we could do for the ones that was alive and now this is where we are."
Police identifed the passenger who died as Amy Chukwu, who was in her early 60s. Chukwu's daughter was driving the car.
The driver's daughter and niece were in the back seat. All three were taken to WakeMed, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.
The car was the only vehicle involved in the crash.
According to family members, the driver has had seizures for the past four or five years and police say it's something they are investigating.
