Fort Bragg closes popular trail for hunting season

FORT BRAGG, N.C. The popular All American Trail will close to bikers, runners and walkers starting Saturday. The ban is in effect through Jan. 3.

Trailhead parking areas were blocked off on Thursday in advance of the season-long closure.

In January, 33-year-old Capt. Jeremiah Sipes of Montana was shot and killed while jogging on the trail on the last day of hunting season.

The 20-mile pathway follows the base's southern border and is popular with joggers, hikers and others. After Sipes was killed, base officials announced a number of new safety features, including a 300-foot, no-hunting buffer zone on the Bragg side of the trail.
