Officer punched in face during attempted arrest

FAYETTEVILLE

It happened early Thursday morning while the officer was attempting to arrest a suspect.

According to authorities, Officer Mary McCaffery was responding to a report of a car break-in around 3:45 a.m. on Sourthport Road in the College Lakes neighborhood, when she spotted a man fitting the description of the alleged suspect.

McCaffery stopped the suspect at the intersection of Ridgeway Drive and Ramsey Street to talk to him and uncovered evidence linking him to the break-in.

The officer began to take the suspect into custody and only managed to get handcuffs onto one of the suspect's wrists, before he began to punch her in the face several times.

McCaffery was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

The suspect was able to flee the scene. He is described as an African American man in his late 20s or early 30s, standing about 6 feet tall and weighing about 215 pounds.

He was last seen riding a bicycle and wearing a hooded sweatshirt, dark colored denim jeans, black shoes and a black puffy jacket.

The suspect was last seen with the handcuffs still on his right wrist.

Authorities are asking anyone who has seen the suspect to call 911.
