A former North Carolina resident was killed Wednesday while in Afghanistan.

U.S. Marines Maj. Sam Griffith was killed in action by enemy fire while on a routine patrol in Helmand province.

No other details about his death have been released.

The 36-year-old Marines Reservist was on his third deployment to Afghanistan. He served with the 4th Air-Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, Marine Forces Reserve, based in West Palm Beach, Florida.

His father told WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach that his son wanted to be a fighter pilot since a young age and lived his life toward that goal. Griffith joined the military 15 years ago.

He leaves behind his wife and two sons who live in Virginia Beach. He has also relatives in Fuquay-Varina and Florida.

Griffith graduated from Enloe High School in 1993.

A memorial service for Griffith is scheduled for Monday.
