Former North Carolina resident killed in Afghanistan

U.S. Marines Maj. Sam Griffith was killed in action by enemy fire while on a routine patrol in Helmand province.

The 36-year-old Marines Reservist was on his third deployment to Afghanistan. He served with the 4th Air-Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, Marine Forces Reserve, based in West Palm Beach, Florida.

He leaves behind his wife and two sons who live in Virginia Beach. He has also relatives in Fuquay-Varina and Florida.

Griffith graduated from Enloe High School in 1993.
