It happened around 2:40 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 301 when a pickup truck and a tractor trailer cab collided.
Troopers say the driver of the pickup truck, 75-year-old Willie Banks, from Rocky Mount, was killed instantly. The driver of the tractor rig was taken to Nash Hospital for chest pains.
Highway 301 was shut down in both directions most of the evening.
