Person hit, killed by train in Durham

DURHAM

It happened around noon near Plum Street.

According to Amtrak's website, the train involved was the #75 Piedmont, headed to Greensboro.

Family members identified the dead teen as Joseph "J" Mewborn - a recent Jordan High School graduate.

"I got a call to come down here and that my nephew had been hit," said Kimberly Carrington.

"They were walking the tracks and Kenny told Joseph there was a train coming...and he didn't have time to push Joseph out of the way," she added.

Mewborn, 21, was walking on the tracks with a friend at the time of the accident. His friend was able to jump out of the way, but unfortunately, Mewborn did not move in time.

"The train was coming and it happened so fast, and we, the family, don't understand how you don't have time when the horn was blowing," said Carrington.

Family says Mewborn was looking for a job when his life was taken.

As the family mourns the loss of their loved one, and ask themselves questions, they believe the incident was not intentional.

"He wasn't someone depressed or anything like that. So this was not some type of suicide...something intentional. This truly we believe was an accident...we just don't know how it happened...and he was a great person," said Carrington.
