The Rev. Dr. Sam Dixon died before he could be rescued from the Montana Hotel, which was destroyed by the earthquake that hit Haiti last week.
Dixon was a member of the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries and the head of humanitarian relief for the church.
His funeral was held at the Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh. Mourners remembered him as a tireless servant of the church who cared deeply for the less fortunate.
