Latasha Bethea was arrested Thursday night on charges of making an unfounded report to law enforcement and resist, delay and obstruction to justice.
The 28-year-old mother reportedly told deputies her daughter was waiting to be picked up from Lucille Souders Elementary School on Hillside Road in Fayetteville around 3 p.m. when a white woman in a white Buick with chrome stripping along the lower half of the vehicle and spoke style rims motioned for her daughter to come with her.
By 6 p.m., the description of the woman and the car was being reported on the evening news. The girl was later found safe at her grandmother's house around 6:45 p.m., according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said a red flag went off for investigators when Bethea didn't want them to look at the grandmother's house.
They also said they learned it was a black woman in a green car that picked the child up from school, not a white woman in a white Buick like Bethea had described.
Authorities have not said who the woman was that picked up the girl.
Meanwhile, Bethea has been released from the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $500 bond.
ABC11 attempted to contact Bethea's Friday morning, but was unsuccessful.
