A proposed bill in the Senate called in the Healthy Marriage Act, would double the current one-year separation period and would require estranged couples to take counseling courses.
The changes in Senate Bill 518 were proposed by Republican Senator Austin Allran, who represents Alexander and Catawba counties, last week.

Besides extending the waiting period before an absolute divorce, the bill would also do away with the mandatory separation currently required during that period, which would allow couples to live together under the same roof.
During that time, couples would have to complete communication courses; along with courses on the impact divorce has on children.
The bill also adds that the person seeking to end the marriage would have to give their spouse written notice of their intent to file for divorce prior to the two-year waiting period.
