"I feel like there's a need to actually do something to make a difference," said Robin Fitzgerald, of H.E.A.T. Studios
Fitzgerald was just one of a handful of business owners who teamed up to raise money for "One Fund Boston." They were offering a free workout at her highly effective athletic training studios in the heart of downtown Raleigh.
"If they just want to come workout, if they want to contribute -- whatever they wanted to do, any part of it -- we're honored that they're here with us," said Fitzgerald.
The fitness blitz kicked off Monday evening at Wilmington and Morgan Streets. More than 140runners circled the Old Capitol for "One Mile in Memory."
"I wanted to be out here and support it," said supporter Jessica Joyner. "I love Boston. I think Boston is a great city."
People like Jessica Joyner and Lisa Sullivan ended at Bolt Bistro and Bar on Fayetteville Street, where the owner donated 10 percent of the evening's tabs.
"For me this is healing," said Sullivan.
Two of the victims that the Raleigh runners were supporting, who have Triangle ties, include Patrick and Jess Downes. The newlyweds each lost a leg in the explosions.
The organizer of the combo of fitness and food hopes to send a strong message with this effort.
"That good wins and that people care and that when it comes down to the thick of it we're going to give back," said organizer Mariah Bridges. "We're going to stand stronger."
