Friend of Jamie Hahn talks about tragedy

RALEIGH

Police allege 31-year-old Jon Broyhill attacked Jamie and her husband Nation in their Raleigh home April 22. Broyhill and the Hahns had been friends for years. He was even best man at their wedding. Police have not spoken about a possible motive, but sources have told ABC11 that Broyhill worked as an accountant for Jamie's political consulting firm, Sky Blue Strategies, where former congressman Brad Miller was a client. Miller said there is money missing from his campaign, and speculated Jamie may have challenged Broyhill to explain what happened.

Jamie's close friend Dallas Thompson told ABC11 how she learned of the attack.

"Nation texted me at 6:50 in the morning and said, 'She's in the ICU. She was attacked. Please pray,'" recalled Thompson, who serves as the vice-president of the Wake County Young Democrats.

Jamie Hahn would not recover from her injuries. She died at WakeMed two days after the attack. Nation was treated for his injuries and released.

It wouldn't be long before Democrats from North Carolina and beyond were rushing to Raleigh. Jamie and Nation Hahn were at the forefront of young Democratic politics in the Raleigh area. Thompson met Hahn while campaigning for gay rights, and they became fast friends.

"Jamie was just a really wonderful person, and will be missed very, very much," said Thompson.

Thompson watched the couple become a political force - she as a fundraiser and he in new media. However, Thompson quickly learned their politics was more a means to an end.

"Their end game is a North Carolina where there's equality, justice, reconciliation, where every kid has access to education," said Thompson. "They both went to Carolina and loved public education so much, and politics was one avenue through which they do that. But Jamie was about so much more than politics. She was really about making the community a better place because it mattered to her."

Thompson refused to even talk about Jon Broyhill. Saying only that, while she is angry, her focus is on her friend, and taking advice she often heard.

"The first thing Jamie would do would be to pour you a glass of wine and then say, 'Oh Dallas, we're going to get it figured out, and that's what we're going to do -- for Nation and Jamie."

ABC11 has learned that Nation Hahn underwent surgery Tuesday. According to friends, Nation had a two-hour hand surgery to repair severed tendons and damaged nerves. He was released after recovering from anesthesia.

Charges against Broyhill were upgraded to murder Tuesday. Police say he injured himself after attacking the Hahns and he was released from hospital Tuesday morning. He's being held without bond.
