Durham police investigate fatal shooting

DURHAM

Officers were dispatched to a shooting call at 4:49 p.m. in the 300 block of Gray Avenue. When police arrived, they found a 47-year-old male who had suffered a gunshot wound. Witnesses told officers that shots were exchanged between occupants of vehicle and people on the street.

A short time later, officers were dispatched to a business near the intersection of Cheek Road and Midland Terrace. Police said a vehicle had pulled into the parking lot and one of the passengers in the vehicle – 32-year-old Ronald Anthony Leathers- had been shot. It was later determined that he had been shot on Gray Avenue.

The 47-year-old victim was treated for his injuries at the hospital and has been released. It appears that he was an innocent bystander, according to investigators. His name has not been released.

Leathers died Thursday at the hospital, according to police.

At least one vehicle was damaged by bullets.

No arrests have been made in the case and investigators are trying to determine the motive.
