New area code coming to the Piedmont

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- Part of North Carolina is getting a new area code.

State officials announced the new 743 area code has been approved for the Piedmont area.

It will overlay the current 336 area code, and will primarily be used for new numbers.

Customers with the 336 area code will be able to keep it.

The State Utilities Commission says they expect all available 336 numbers to be used by 2016.
