Bear spotted in Durham County
DURHAM (WTVD) -- Warm weather and the smell of food usually brings on bear sightings in the spring and summer.
Some homeowners in Northern Durham County are on the lookout for bears this fall after a cub found its way into a backyard off Mason Road two weeks ago.
They posted a photo on social media as the baby bear made its escape into the woods.
The North Carolina Wildlife Commission says bears are rarely aggressive. Wildlife officers recommend giving the animals their space if there's a backyard encounter.
According to the Commission, there are active bears in Person County this time of year that may be expanding their territory in search of food.
Some of the bears were spotted on trail cameras in Rougemont and Creedmoor in recent weeks.
