UNC student's blood alcohol content twice the legal limit night of triple fatal crash

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- Prosecutors alleged Friday that Chandler Kania's blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit the night he drove the wrong way down Interstate 85, killing three people.

The District Attorney's office said the 20-year-old's BAC was .17 on July 19. The legal limit in North Carolina is .08 for adults. The legal limit for anyone under the age of 21 is zero.

Kania is charged with three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of felony death by a motor vehicle, and one count of felony serious injury by a motor vehicle in the deaths of 46-year-old Darlene McGee of Charlotte, her 49-year-old friend Felecia Harris of Charlotte, and Harris' 6-year-old granddaughter Jahnice Baird of Brooklyn, New York.

Investigators are waiting on tests to determine whether Kania had any controlled substances in his system the night of the fatal crash.

Kania released from jail after his family posted a $1 million bond. His next court date is Aug. 10.
