WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. -- Seven high school students from Chapel Hill are nearing the finish of their coast-to-coast bicycle trek to draw attention to the deadly threat that teens face from cancer.
The group of Boy Scouts is expecting to cross into North Carolina on Saturday before wrapping up in Wrightsville Beach midweek. They started out in mid-June more than 3,000 miles away on the Oregon coast.
Their goal was to honor a schoolmate who died from cancer and to raise awareness and funds for teen cancer programs. Sophie Steiner died of cancer in 2013 after expressing her desire to help other teens cope with an overwhelming cancer diagnosis.
