4-year-old girl hospitalized after drive-by shooting in Shelby
SHELBY, N.C. -- Police are trying to find the suspect or suspects responsible for a drive-by shooting that sent a little girl to the hospital late Monday night in Shelby - which is less than 50 miles west of Charlotte.
WSOC-TV reports that investigators were called to Toms Street around 11 p.m. and spent all night collecting evidence and interviewing neighbors.
Police said the child was inside a house when someone drove by and fired several shots into the home and another house.
Neighbors told WSOC that dozens of shots were fired into the homes.
Officers said that the girl, who is 4-years-old, suffered a gunshot wound in her side. No one else in either house was hurt.
A family member took the girl to Cleveland Memorial Hospital, where she was then transferred to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The girl's uncle, who was inside the house when the shots were fired, said she is doing well, but there's a lot of confusion and anger from her family.
"I heard my sister saying, 'My daughter bleeding, my daughter bleeding,' so I ran in there seeing her lay on the floor," said Delonta Leach. "I picked her up, ran to the back door and got in the car and drove to the hospital."
Neighbors said the shots rattled the street, shaking homes and causing people to fear for their lives.
"It sounded like the Fourth of July going off, firecrackers and everything," said Randolph Parrott. "The first shot went off, boom, boom, boom. When that boom, boom, boom came off I knew it was an AK or pistol."
WSOC reports more than 50 evidence markers were seen scattered across the ground.
Police have not released any suspect of vehicle descriptions and there have been no arrests.
