Police say 15-year-old killed in Durham double shooting

DURHAM (WTVD) -- A 15-year-old boy was the victim of Durham's latest homicide Tuesday night.

The shooting happened just after 10:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Maplewood Drive, off Dearborn Drive, north of I-85.

Police said David Pounds and 25-year-old Timothy Stevens Jr. were standing outside when a vehicle drove by them and shots were fired from the vehicle.

Both were hit. They were taken to the hospital where Pounds later died. Stevens was treated for his injuries and released.

Pounds' brother Keyshon Blue told ABC11 Wednesday he did not know of anyone who wanted to hurt the teen.

"He was only 15 years old. I just don't understand why they would do this to him. I don't understand why they would do this to him I don't understand why," said Blue.

Pounds' mother, JoAnn Peaks, tells ABC11 the sound of gunfire has become the norm in their neighborhood.

"These crazy kids been coming around, just driving by shooting," she said. "Just shooting people for no reason."

Durham police said in the last year, officers have responded to Maplewood Drive nine times for reports of sounds of shots fired. Two other times, including the night Pounds was killed, police responded to someone being shot.

Peaks said she doesn't blame anyone for the problem, but looks at her own community for why this type of violence has become a way of life.

"It's the youth, period," she said. "Because they don't have stuff for these kids to do anymore."

Pounds was a sophomore at Northern High School.

Authorities said the shooting did not appear to be random. No charges have been filed at this time.
