DURHAM (WTVD) -- It was a crowded and heavily guarded courtroom Thursday morning as the suspects in Monday's shooting of two women in Durham County faced a judge for the first time.
Authorities arrested 23-year-old Quashaun Niajel Slade, 19-year-old Alezai Clay of Durham and Brittany Lassiter in connection with the shootings of 17-year-old Alexis Patterson and 19-year-old Dymond Patrice Fowler. Fowler died in the incident.
A fourth suspect, 24-year-old Jesus Arce, was taken into custody following Thursday morning's court hearing and has been charged with kidnapping and two counts of conspiracy in connection with the crime.
A fifth person, 19-year-old Dominque Faulkner, was arrested a short time later and charged with two counts conspiracy, along with a probation violation from Guilford County.
The shooting happened just before 9:30 p.m. Monday in the 4700 block of Glenn Road, just north of Interstate 85 near Falls Lake.
After the shooting, Patterson played dead, according to authorities, but was later able to run to a house on Glenn Road for help and was taken to the hospital.
Slade is facing first-degree murder, kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill charges. Lassiter is also facing murder, kidnapping and conspiracy charges, while Clay is facing two counts of first-degree kidnapping and two counts of felony conspiracy charges.
In court Thursday, the judge set Clay's bond at $1 million despite the DA requesting a $5 million bond.
The judge also ordered Slade and Lassiter be held in jail under no bond.
Relatives for all three suspects showed up in court Thursday, which prompted authorities to add extra security. Lassiter's grandmother told the judge her granddaughter was innocent.
"She has kids, she is God-fearing." Rachel Jones said.
