GREENVILLE (WTVD) -- Police at East Carolina University are investigating a sexual assault reported on campus Wednesday morning.

Officials say around 5:30 a.m., officers received a report about a sexual assault of a female student happening at a residence hall around 1 a.m.

Authorities said they are working to identify a suspect, but are not disclosing additional details at this time because of the ongoing investigation.

"We will use every resource at our disposal including reviewing camera footage to investigate this incident thoroughly," Police Chief Gerald Lewis said. "Our goal is to confirm the facts of the case and if the allegations are proven to be true hold those responsible accountable."

"This is a very difficult time for the student, physically and emotionally, and we want that student to know they have a confidential, safe place to get the assistance needed for the short and long term," said Dr. Lynn Roeder, ECU Dean of Students.
