Elizabeth City prison where 2 workers died remains on lockdown

ELIZABETH CITY, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Pasquotank Correctional Institution remains on lockdown, the NC Department of Public Safety said Monday.

The prison has been on lockdown since an inmate escape attempt on October 12 that resulted in the deaths of two employees.

Correctional Officer Justin Smith, 35, and Correction Enterprises Manager Veronica Darden, 50, were killed by inmates in the escape attempt.

Ten other prison employees were injured.

Correctional Officer Wendy Shannon, Correctional Officer George Midgett and maintenance worker Geoffrey Howe remain at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment for injuries suffered during the incident.

Members of the Prison Emergency Response Team from other state prison facilities, along with other support staff, are providing assistance to the Pasquotank prison staff.

The Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office, along with the State Bureau of Investigation, continues to investigate the incident.

Pasquotank Correctional Institution houses approximately 720 male inmates in close, medium and minimum custody.
