DURHAM (WTVD) -- Easter is weeks away and the Durham Rescue Mission wants to make sure children in underprivileged families are not left out. They want to give an Easter basket to every needy child, and they're asking for your help.

The mission holds an Easter celebration for the needy every year and last year it gave away 1,325 Easter baskets. This year It's hoping to give away 1,500.

It received its first donation Friday morning and has collected only 14 baskets so far.

Even though the shelves are mostly empty now, Chief Operations Officer Rob Tart said Easter is huge for the mission, because it's at the center of its beliefs, and it's the motivation for what it does.

"Easter is celebrating the resurrection of our Lord," Tart said. "It is the basis of our whole faith. It is the basis of our Christianity. It is the reason we do the Rescue Mission."

The hope is that community members will either donate online or drop off basket donations at the Center for Hope

.

Online donations can be made here. Just specify the donation is for "Easter Baskets' in the comments section.

If you'd like to drop off a basket, the Center for Hope is at 1201 East Main Street in Durham.

"We realize this is not life and death - this is not something that would prevent someone from making it to the next day - but still we want every child to have the opportunity to have an Easter basket, Tart said.

"And there's a lot of parents out there that are struggling, that are working part-time jobs, that are under-employed, and it may not seem like much, but an Easter basket can make a big difference in people's lives."
