Residents in Fayetteville take a stand against violence
FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Several hundred residents rallied on the Fayetteville courthouse steps Tuesday night, vowing to help the community fight escalating gun violence.
"We are tired of violence and we are ready to to put an end to it," said Sheriff Earl Moose Butler.
There was a lot of strong talk like that from community leaders. Residents like Barbara Marshall came to the "Stop the Violence" rally expecting big things.
"We as people who care about our youth are willing to pull together so the youth can see there is a bright tomorrow," Marshall said.
So far this year, Fayetteville Police say there have been ten homicides committed in the city limits, including the shooting death of 19-year-old Ravon Jordan who was caught in the crossfire of rival gang members.
Speaking to the crowd, his mother called for justice.
Police Chief Harold Medlock said his officers are weary from the violent crime wave. He said the community must share some of the blame for it, saying, "...and the blood is on the hands of every one in this city, if we dare not holding our youth accountable for their actions before tragedy occurs."
City leaders and residents left the rally saying they were committed to working with each other to stop the violence.
