DURHAM (WTVD) -- A local organization committed to feeding those in need got some major help Monday.

A grant from Bayer Crop Sciences was presented to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in an effort to provide healthy meals for children who may go hungry on the weekends when schools are out.

With the money, volunteers assembled an ambitious goal of 2,000 meals, which organizers call weekend power packs,in 90 minutes.

"Things that the kids themselves probably can fix," said Louella Rutledge with Walnut Grove United Methodist Church. "There are fruit cups, there are granola bars, cereal, things that are nutritious. I'm lucky enough to have fed my children and grandchildren, and they have no control over it. It's up to us to give them a hand!"

Despite the ambitious objective, the group did meet their goal.

"People come motivated to make a difference in the community, so we try to make it as easy as possible," said Dave Goodrich with Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina of volunteers. "They're a good, motivated bunch, they're very organized, and it's a pleasure to start your Monday morning with a great project like this."
