HOPE MILLS, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities say a Hope Mills police officer was involved in a shooting Sunday morning.

It happened around 8:45 a.m. near the intersection of Legion Road and Pinewood Drive.

Police say Officer L. Munoz was conducting a traffic stop when the driver Marcell D. Campbell, 31, became aggressive and attempted to assault him with a metal bat.

During the struggle, the officer discharged his Taser, to no effect. Campbell then charged at Munoz with the metal bat and he shot him with his service weapon.

Campbell then got back in his SUV and took off. He was stopped a short time later by assisting Hope Mills officers at the dead-end portion of Pinewood Drive.

April Remson lives near the initial traffic stop. She said she woke up to hearing the officer tell the driver to put the vehicle in park. Remson said she could tell the situation was escalating and began moving to a safer place inside her home.

"Just as I entered the kitchen, I heard the police officer must have fired the rounds, about 2 to 3 shots were fired," said Remson.

She then said she saw the vehicle drive toward the end and two officers give chase.

Campbell was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

From hospital, he was taken to the Cumberland County Jail.

Munoz has been with the Hope Mills Police Department since 2011, and was not injured during the incident.

Campbell will be charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and no operator's license.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
