Hurricane Arthur forces summer camp evacuations
An early summer hurricane on the NC coast is forcing summer camps to evacuate hundreds of Triangle area kids inland until Hurricane Arthur passes by.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The arrival of an early summer hurricane on the North Carolina coast is forcing summer camps to evacuate hundreds of Triangle area kids inland until Hurricane Arthur passes by.

The YMCA of the Triangle says kids from Camp Sea Gull for boys and Camp Seafarer for girls will be brought to Raleigh just for the night, and then they'll be bused back to the coast Friday.

For safety reasons, parents are asked not to try and visit children or take them out of programs. The YMCA said it has plenty of activities planned to keep the kids occupied.

The YMCA plans to use Wake County schools as host sites. Students will sleep in the gym and boys and girls will be separated. Counselors will stay with them.

About 70 students in the Duke TiP Marine Lab program in Beaufort are also returning to the Triangle.

They left for Duke's east campus just before 10 a.m. Thursday and should arrive around 1 p.m.

Students will continue with classes as normal and will remain there through Saturday - when the program ends.

At that point, parents are being asked to pick up students at Brown Hall on Duke's campus. Students flying out will be taken to RDU as previously planned.
