SANFORD, N.C. -- A Sanford jewelry store has suffered a $100,000 theft just before Christmas.

Owner Joe Purce of Kathryn's Hallmark and Fiona's Jewelry told The Sanford Herald that he arrived Saturday morning to find the front door smashed along with a half-dozen jewelry displays.

Purce says he's never experienced a theft like it during his 20 years in business in Sanford.

He said it's devastating to lose so much inventory before Christmas and is working with the Pandora jewelry company to replace some of it by next week. The store will remain open for business.

Sanford Police Capt. Harold Layton said detectives are searching for surveillance footage that may help.

Purce said the store's cameras were not recording overnight.
