DURHAM (WTVD) -- A Durham family is honoring their daughter's memory by helping out future generations of students.
Krista Lynn Smith's parents have started a scholarship in her name for the Watts School of Nursing in Durham.
This week, they handed out the first check to one hardworking young man.
Krista was 18 years old when she ran off Infinity Road and hit a fence last year.
She had recently graduated from the Durham School of the Arts with a 4.0 GPA and was planning to go to nursing school.
"She herself had a congenital heart defect. She had three open-heart surgeries," said Krista's mother, Lynn Smith. "She'd been through a lot and hoped to be able to give some of that back with becoming a nurse -- working on or in surgery."
