Georgia Tech beats UNC Wilmington 3-1 in Athens Regional

Mike Becchetti crushed an 0-2 pitch well past the left field wall in the bottom of the fourth and Georgia Tech beat UNC Wilmington 3-1 on Sunday in the Athens Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (33-24) advance to the regional final to face Georgia later on Sunday and Monday if necessary.

With the score tied at 1-all, Bobby Zmarzlak singled down the right field line. Becchetti stepped to the plate and fell behind 0-2 in the count before rocking a Zack Taylor changeup over the wall.

An inning earlier, Drew Burress knotted it at a run apiece when he took Taylor to the deep part of left center field.

The Seahawks (40-21) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Tanner Thach doubled to left center to score Aiden Evans who just before him singled down the first base line.

Bodine's home run lifts Coastal Carolina past High Point, into Clemson Regional final

Caden Bodine hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning and Coastal Carolina defeated High Point 6-5 on Sunday to reach the championship round at the Clemson Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

The Chanticleers (36-24) will play regional host Clemson later in the day with a spot in the super regionals on the line. Clemson advances with a victory, while Coastal Carolina would need to win on Sunday and again on Monday in order to advance.

Derek Bender staked Coastal to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, ripping a 0-0 pitch deep to left field. Four pitchers cruised through six innings on the mound, allowing just a solo home run in the second inning and a fielder's choice RBI in the sixth.

Trailing 4-2 heading to the seventh, High Point took the lead with a three-run rally. An error and a single chased Parker Cassell, then reliever Dominick Carbone gave up an RBI single and another run scored on a grounder before Coastal Carolina could record an out. With one out, a sacrifice fly by Brayden Simpson gave High Point a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Bodine wasted little time getting the lead back for Coastal. After a leadoff single by Graham Brown, Bodine went deep to right for the 6-5 lead.

Andrew Bowers (2-0) and Bryce Schaffer (S1) closed out the win on the mound.

Eric Grintz had four hits and two RBI for High Point (35-27).

East Carolina keeps super regional hopes alive holding off VCU 10-7

Carter Cunningham homered and drove in two runs, Jacob Jenkins-Cowart also drove in a pair of runs and East Carolina held off VCU for a 10-7 win on Sunday in the Greenville Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

'The Pirates (45-16) built a 4-0 lead after three innings, 6-2 after four and 8-4 after five. After ECU pushed it to 10-4 after seven, VCU made its move.

Jake Thilges and Cooper Benzin both singled to start the bottom of the eighth. After Aden Hill's line out to third, Nic Ericsson and Casey Kleinman followed with consecutive singles that scored Thilges and Benzin. After Chris McHugh got hit by a pitch, East Carolina pitcher Danny Beal bore down and proceeded to strike out Brandon Eike and Eli Weisner to end the threat.

The bottom of the ninth was just as adventurous as the Rams put two of their first three batters on with a hit-by-pitch and fielder's choice. A wild pitch put Thilges and Benzin at second and third, respectively. Hill then grounded out to second, allowing Thilges to score. With VCU now trailing 10-7, Ericsson fouled out in third-base territory to end it.

Ryan McCrystal went 3 for 5 and drove in a run for East Carolina (45-16). Beal pitched five innings in relief to move his record to 8-2.

Kleinman drove in three runs for VCU and Thilges went 3 for 4 and scored four runs.

East Carolina advanced to face Evansville later Sunday. A Pirates win would force a winner-take-all contest on Monday.

Georgia cruises past UNC Wilmington for 11-2 win

Kolby Branch hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the second inning and that proved more than enough as Georgia dismantled UNC Wilmington 11-2 on Saturday in the Athens Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

UNC Wilmington will face Georgia Tech on Sunday for the right to face Georgia in the regional championship later in the day.

Tre Phelps singled to center field to start the second for Georgia (41-15) and Dillon Carter was hit by a pitch. Fernando Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice, and Phelps advanced to third. Clayton Chadwick drew a walk and that set the stage for Branch - the No. 9 hitter - whose blast created a 5-1 lead that was never threatened.

Slate Alford went 3 for 5 and Corey Collins 2 for 3 for Georgia. Collins put Georgia on the board first with a solo home run before the Seahawks' Trevor Marsh homered to left field at the top of the second to tie it at 1-all.

Despite surrendering six walks, Kol Smith spread four hits across four innings and struck out five. DJ Radtke got the win for Georgia in two innings of work following Smith.

Brock Wills went 2 for 4 and drove in a run for the Seahawks (40-20) and Alec DeMartino went 2 for 3 and drew two walks.
