VIDEOS: Winter storm brings another snowfall to central NC

NORTH CAROLINA (WTVD) -- The dangerously cold weather is here to stay for a while, and snow moved through central North Carolina, the Sandhills, and some NC coastal areas.

The ABC11 First Alert Weather Team continues to track the snow and who will see the greatest impact.

This comes only a week after many across central NC got a measurable snowfall since 2022. RDU officially got less than an inch of snow, along with 0.07" of ice. Areas closer to the Virginia border saw the highest amount of snow around 3 to 4 inches.

Schools closings and delays

The Wake County Public School System said all classes are canceled Thursday for students. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools said Wednesday afternoon that Thursday will be a remote learning day.

Winter storm making roads treacherous

During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Governor Josh Stein urged people to avoid being on the roadways Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning as road conditions would be slick.

"One unfortunate reality of living in North Carolina is we have a lot of bad weather and when we have that weather, it gives us the experience to know what we need to do in anticipation of the storm," said Stein.

The governor delivered remarks from the North Carolina National Guard Armory in Greensboro while on his way to Western North Carolina.

The governor also praised NCDOT and other responders for being well-positioned to address the incoming weather.

Sustained cold challenges road crews

"One of the biggest challenges with this one is the fact that we've been cold for a few days. So, pavement temperatures are already low. Any precipitation that falls is going to immediately start to accumulate. So that's one of our challenges with the storm," said Jason Holmes, a Raleigh NCDOT Manager

Hundreds of vehicles ready for upcoming storm, NCDOT says

ABC11 spoke with NCDOT crews earlier ahead of what could be a busy Tuesday.

275 to 300 vehicles will be staged in seven counties, including Wake, Durham and counties that border Virginia. Around 2 p.m., crews will start to pay closer attention to this upcoming forecast.

The change in forecast has also made NCDOT's response challenging because of the ground temperatures.

"The ground is cold... it's impacted our ability to put brine on the ground because we've had to wait for the right temperatures to hit for us to install," Wake County Maintenance Engineer Doug McNeal said. "When it comes at 4 o'clock, we could have a challenge if folks are out and about, and we see an initial blast of snow, the roads are going to get slick quick."

McNeal also said the department has another 50 vehicles on reserve that they will make available if needed.
