MiraDry: New technology eliminates underarm perspiration
When it comes to treating underarm perspiration and odor, Dr. Cynthia Diehl calls MiraDry the latest and greatest FDA-approved treatment available.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- When it comes to treating underarm perspiration and odor, Dr. Cynthia Diehl calls miraDry the latest and greatest FDA-approved treatment available.

"It's electromagnetic energy, so it's actually heat energy that's transmitted just below the skin where those glands are and it's very safe because the wand that we use cools the skin and then allows the heat energy to transfer exactly where we need it," explains Cynthia Diehl, M.D.

In addition to getting rid of the sweat and odor glands, the treatment also knocks out the hair follicle, resulting in less underarm hair.

The procedure itself takes about half an hour for each armpit, so an hour total. And Dr. Diehl says it can eliminate sweating in as little as just one treatment.

The procedure made a believer out of Sharon Carducci, who has been very active since undergoing this procedure in June.

"I've done some kayaking, some bicycling, went to the gym, walked the dog," Carducci said. "And every time I do it I'm actually checking things out to see how it's going, and no underarm perspiration and no need to wear deodorant!"

Dr. Diehl says that's typical for most patients, although those who suffer from true hyperhydrosis, or severe sweating, may require a second treatment. Still, she says it beats the other alternatives on the market.

"Botox, it's very effective but it requires repeat injections every six months or so and it requires a lot of little needle sticks in a fairly sensitive area so some people don't like that. And a surgery, that's obviously invasive, where they are cutting a nerve," she explains.

Meanwhile, this option is pain-free, save for the injection done first to numb the area. And even though you're eliminating the sweat glands under your arms, Dr. Diehl says this doesn't hinder your body's efforts to cool itself down.

"Of the over 4 million sweat glands on your body, only 2 percent are located in this area."

At Diehl Plastic Surgery the first miraDry treatment is almost $2,000. If you want a second treatment, the cost for that is $1,000.
