Water was pouring out from the break

Crews have repaired a water main break in Raleigh that left an unknown number of residents without water most of Wednesday.

The 12-inch water main break happened near I-440 and Jones Franklin Road. The location made it harder to fix, because the water main was tucked back in the woods in the wide median strip between the I-440 on-ramp and the highway.

Crews had to clear trees from the area in order to fix the break. They were able to repair the main around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Officials said the break was caused by tree roots. They did not comment on how many residents are without water, but one maintenance worker at a nearby apartment complex said hundreds of people were affected.

The City of Raleigh Public Affairs Department said homes and businesses on Waters Edge Drive, and Jones Franklin Road, between Capital Center Drive and Barringer Drive, were without water.
