DURHAM (WTVD) -- Police found a man's body early Tuesday after getting a report of gunshots.

It happened just after 2 a.m.

The report about gunshots came from the 900 block of East Main Street, and the man's body was discovered behind an apartment complex off Angier Avenue in the area of Main and South Elm Street.

Police identified the dead man as 30-year-old Mark Antwan Peaks.

An uncle said Peaks lived in the area where he was found.

"My niece called me and said that her son had got shot. And I couldn't believe it. I jumped out of the bed and ran up here," said Arthur Peace.

It's the first murder of the year in the city.

"Whoever did it, it's a senseless thing that should not have occurred," said Peace.
