CLINTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- Saturday was an emotional day in Sampson County as family and friends gathered to honor five of six lives lost in a tragic house fire. The victims included a 9-year-old and a 10-year-old.
About 300 people packed the church, and one relative became overcome with grief during the ceremony.
"It's real bad when you lose children," said Regina Williamson, who is Wilson's niece. "You know any death is hard, and we're just trying to take it one day at a time for both families."
Last Saturday in Garland, flames consumed a mobile home that belonged to Laura Ann Newkirk. She died alongside her son, Johnny Newkirk, and her longtime boyfriend James Wilson.
Neighbors said the fire also claimed the lives of Johnny's girlfriend, Nita Robinson, and her two young children.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
In the meantime, the victims' families lean on their faith to help them with the unbearable pain.
"Going through hard times, trying to hold up, but we'll get through," said Regina Williamson. "With God's help we'll get through."
Sunday, the sixth fire victim will be laid to rest.
