FUQUAY-VARINA (WTVD) -- A daughter and mother are facing charges after refusing to return a missing dog to its owner, according to police in Fuquay-Varina.

Officers at the Fuquay-Varina Police Department were alerted about the incident on June 23 when the owner of a Chihuahua named Lexie reported her stolen.

Police said the owner had received information through social media that Lexie had been located after escaping from her yard in the Stroll Circle Drive area of Fuquay-Varina.

However, the woman who investigators learned had the animal refused to return the dog to the owner.

Police said after many attempts to work with 22-year-old Sarah Marie Lilley of Clayton and her mother, 38-year-old Kathleen Elizabeth Belinski of Clayton, to return the Chihuahua, they arrested the pair.

Lilley was charged with larceny of a dog, while Belinski was charged with aid and abet larceny and resisting a public officer by providing false information.

Officials said the dog is back with her owner.
