1 dead, another seriously injured in Raleigh nightclub shooting

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A 33-year-old man has died after a shooting at a Raleigh nightclub, adding to a series of violent incidents along a one-mile stretch of New Bern Avenue.

Jorge Dorantes-Carranz died Wednesday from injuries he suffered in a shooting Sunday at the Patio Night Club on New Bern Avenue. A growing memorial of flowers, candles and handwritten notes now sits outside the business in his honor.

His death highlights what residents and authorities say has been a persistent problem in the area. Multiple shootings - some deadly - have occurred over the past year at several nightclubs along New Bern Avenue, including StarBar, Touchdown Sports Bar and Patio Night Club.

Frank Brostrom, a retired FBI agent who now works in private investigations and executive protection, said the pattern raises questions about how weapons are getting inside the venues.
"If they're not going to provide a safe environment for people to go, people shouldn't go," Brostrom said.

He noted that security screenings should prevent firearms from entering the buildings.

"If you're using a wand and someone's walking in, how do you not detect that that weapon is on them?" Brostrom said. "Was the gun brought in some other way, through a back door by an employee or something like that?"

The North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission has suspended alcohol permits for nightclubs with multiple violent offenses, though some businesses have remained open despite repeated incidents.

"If you have one incident - even one or two incidents - they need to up their security, bottom line," Brostrom said. "They need to have the reputation that they're not going to put up with it. If they're known to just let things happen, that's what you're going to find."

Raleigh police continue to investigate the shooting. A second victim remains hospitalized.
