2 NCCU students recovering after drive-by shooting near campus
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham Police are investigating a late-night shooting that injured two North Carolina Central University students.
It happened just before 11 p.m. Sunday, Durham Police said.
A man and a woman were walking in the vicinity of Concord and Dupree streets, not far from East Lawson Street, when someone fired shots from a passing car.
Both students suffered what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Both students were later released to the care of their families, NCCU Chief of Police Robert Gaddy said.
"I want to be straightforward. This kind of news is unsettling, and it is right to be concerned about the well-being of our Eagle family and our neighbors," Gaddy said in a message to the NCCU community. "Please know that the safety of every student, faculty, and staff member remains my top priority. In response, I have directed increased patrols on and around campus, and our officers remain visible and available to you around the clock."
Gaddy also urged students to be cautious and stay safe by traveling in groups and using the free Eagle After Dark shuttle to get around campus.
"I'm surprised. I heard sirens a lot Sunday night, but I wasn't really aware of what was going on. I was inside, obviously," said NCCU student Keenan Haines. "But now that I know, I really want to stay inside."
He said it was shocking that the shooting happened nearby.
Another NCCU student, Saniyah East, said she doesn't generally walk out at night, "unless I like, go get food."
She said she didn't hear gunshots, but she did hear the sirens.
Juan Zuniga, who was in his home playing video games, said he heard the gunfire and learned that his car was damaged.
"I just hear a boom, like this, something," Zuniga said. His car was hit by bullets, and the back window was blown out.
"The glass broke open, I go silent, and then the police tell me that I need to stay inside my home and don't go outside," he told ABC11.
No arrests have been made.
