Arrest made after remains found in Fayetteville woods were those of woman missing since 2021
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said it has identified the human remains found last week in a wooded area off Deep Creek Road in Fayetteville.
On Monday, the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the remains as those of Laniyah Danyell Whitted, who had been reported missing on Nov. 23, 2021.
"While this outcome is heartbreaking, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is grateful that Laniyah has been found and identified, allowing her family to finally have answers after years of uncertainty," the sheriff's office wrote. "We extend our deepest condolences to Laniyah's family, friends, and all those who loved her during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts remain with them as they grieve this tremendous loss."
Kabron Markel Thaggard, 22, of Fayetteville, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a body.
Thaggard was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond. He is scheduled to make a first appearance at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Whitted's remains were found Thursday in the 1300 block of Deep Creek Road
