
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Cumberland County commissioners unanimously approved Major Johnathan Morgan as the new sheriff, following the retirement of Sheriff Ennis Wright in June.
Morgan is currently at the operations commander at the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. He will complete the remainder of Wright's term, which runs through December 2026.
"Our primary goal throughout this process has been to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of operations within the Sheriff's Office," said Board of Commissioners Chairman Kirk deViere. "The Board of Commissioners collectively felt that Major Morgan's experience and understanding of current operations and procedures make him uniquely positioned to maintain the high standards of public safety our citizens expect and deserve. We also thank all nine applicants who stepped forward during this time of transition. Their willingness to serve demonstrates the strength of character and commitment to public service that makes our community exceptional."
The board also approved Morgan's salary of $195,000.
"I look forward to continuing to work alongside Sheriff Morgan, just as I did with Sheriff Wright," said County Manager Clarence Grier. "I am excited for the collaboration ahead as we continue our mission to ensure the safety and well-being of our community."
The other candidates who vied for the position, including former Fayetteville Police Chief Kem Braden, Fayetteville Tech's Director of Public Safety Joseph Bailer and sheriff's deputy Terry Ray.
