Bunn High School grieving loss of student killed in weekend crash
BUNN, N.C. (WTVD) -- Bunn High School is mourning the loss of a student who was killed in a crash in Franklin County over the weekend, school officials said.
The school identified the victim of Saturday night's crash as Juan Alvarado Vazquez, a senior at Bunn High School.
According to the State Highway Patrol, a 2007 GMC Yukon was traveling east on N.C. 98 when it ran off the left side of the road and struck a large tree. Troopers, along with local fire and EMS personnel, responded to the crash around 11 p.m. Saturday.
Officials said the driver was killed. Five other occupants, all passengers, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities said everyone involved was a minor.
The Highway Patrol said alcohol and speeding were not factors in the crash. Officials also said everyone was wearing a seat belt and the vehicle sustained heavy damage where the airbags deployed.
Bunn High School said grief counselors and additional support personnel are available at the school Monday and throughout the week for students and staff who need support.
"It feels different because we used to ride the same bus and he's not there," Jacieo Acunteco said.
Loved ones describe Vazquez as a kind person and a good brother who will be deeply missed. He was also a member of the school's soccer team. District officials said the coach and principal are unavailable for comment as they continue to process his death during the first week of school.
"The loss of a student is heartbreaking and impacts an entire school community. We know Juan's passing will be deeply felt by his classmates, friends, teachers, coaches, and all those who knew and cared for him," Principal Tyler Morris said in a statement.
The crash remains under investigation.
