Safety fears rise after fatal stabbing on American Tobacco Trail

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Linda Jeffries said the violence was disturbing after a fatal stabbing shut down part of the American Tobacco Trail on Monday.

"Just horrified," Jeffries said. "It doesn't make any sense. You have to really be aware of your surroundings."

Durham Police said a man was stabbed to death near Fayetteville and E. Pilot streets.

"It's definitely concerning as somebody who lives in the area," Rachel Cordero said.

The area has seen 14 homicides in the last 12 months, according to the ABC11 Neighborhood Safety Tracker.

Cordero, who's a community advocate, said the community needs better, targeted resources.

Now, she's working on an upcoming event about a mile away on Cornwallis Road.

"We're going to have conversations, tables, aimed around five important concepts in Durham, one of them being housing," Cordero said. "I think we need to work more directly with these people to find out what they need as individuals so that we can align them with the resources that we do have available for the city."

The trail is back open, and a crosswalk sign reminds runners and walkers to take caution, including walking or running with a friend.

As of Tuesday, Durham Police have not released the identity of the victim and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police are still searching for the person responsible.
