Communities across the Triangle prepare for threat of severe weather

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Tar Heel State is bracing for a one-two punch this weekend, as heavy rain gives way to an uncertain impact from a tropical system.

From Raleigh to Chapel Hill, officials are urging people to prepare now for the potential severe weather threat.

The Red Cross says its volunteers and staff are ready to mobilize.

Executive Director Ellen Gorham of the Red Cross in the Triangle said they're ready to open shelters if needed.

"We always know that hope is not a plan. We've got to be prepared," she said. "Build a kit. Make sure you have water, you've got medicine, you've even a blanket, some food ready to go, a cell phone charger, important documents. Get those ready now."

In Chapel Hill, blockades are already up in areas where flooding is expected.

This comes as stores at the Eastgate Crossing Shopping Center remain closed as they clean up from the flooding brought by Tropical Storm Chantal in July.

As the threat of severe weather gets closer to the Triangle, it's important to stay informed, have a plan in case severe weather threatens you and your family, and constantly check the forecast for the latest updates.

"We know that the path is uncertain, but we've got to be prepared and ready so we can help our communities," said Gorham.
