Drought drops Falls Lake levels, revealing hidden dangers for boaters

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- It may look like a perfect day to be out on the water, but dropping water levels at Falls Lake are creating new hazards for boaters.

The Highway 50 boat launch was busy with activity, as people took advantage of the warm weather. However, the ongoing drought has caused water levels at the lake to fall roughly four feet below normal, according to officials.

The lower water levels are hard to miss. Shorelines are expanding, and more shoals are becoming visible, creating potential obstacles for anyone out on the water.

Officials and boaters alike say those conditions mean extra caution is needed.

"Just be careful, especially if you're tubing or skiing," said Nate Brisson of Rolesville. "Try to be mindful that there are things in the water -- obstacles -- that you could possibly collide with that you may not normally have to worry about."

As temperatures continue to rise and more people head to the lake to cool off, those who frequent Falls Lake say awareness is key.

They're urging anyone heading out on the water to pay close attention to changing conditions and watch for hazards that may not have been present before.
