FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- The holiday season is here, and the Fayetteville Police Department wants to help you stay safe with some important travel tips.

If you live in Fayetteville, consider signing up for the city's House Check program. Patrol officers will check on your home while you're away. To register, visit HERE, go to Community Policing & Engagement, then selecting "Request a House/Party Check."

Similar programs are also available through the Chapel Hill and Apex police departments.

With increased foot and vehicle traffic around Cross Creek Mall and other shopping centers, more officers will be on patrol. The Fayetteville Police Department's Crime Prevention unit offers these tips to help you stay safe:

Lock, Take, Hide: Always LOCK your vehicle, TAKE your keys and valuables with you, and HIDE shopping bags and gifts in the trunk or out of plain sight before reaching your next destination.

Park Smart: Park in well-lit areas.

Stay Alert: Avoid becoming distracted by your phone while walking to and from your car. Have your vehicle keys in hand.

Shop in Pairs: There is safety in numbers. Shop with a friend or family member if possible.
