Dogwood Festival organizers warn event's future may depend on city funding

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- The organizers behind Fayetteville's beloved Dogwood Festival are raising concerns about the future of the annual event.

During a recent work session, Executive Director Kaylynn Suarez highlighted the festival's economic impact, saying it brings in an estimated $10 million to $20 million each year** for the local economy.

Despite that impact, Suarez told city leaders the nonprofit that organizes the festival is struggling with rising production costs. She warned the 44-year-old tradition may eventually become unsustainable without financial assistance from the city.

"I've been pretty transparent about what's in Dogwood's bank account," Suarez said. "This year's festival again -- $146,000 is what it's going to cost...Dogwood has $22,000 in the account right now -- and that's with some sponsorship checks still coming in. That's with one of the headliners already paid, and (those) are things people don't see behind the scenes. While we are a free event to attend, there are changes that are impacting us."

Suarez presented three proposals to the city for support, including a $100,000 annual investment to help keep the festival financially viable.

City leaders say they are now considering options to secure funding for the Dogwood Festival, with a decision expected by next month.
