DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The second-oldest Black American Legion Post in the country, American Legion Post 175 in Durham, is getting a new roof.
And it didn't cost them a thing.
On Tuesday, crews were hard at work removing the old roof and spending the day building a new one.
The project is funded by QXO for Veterans, which provides free roofs to veteran organizations.
This time, American Legion Post 175 was the recipient.
This is a new chapter for us," said post commander Adrienne Sutton. "This is going forward because people think the building is abandoned because it's so raggedy, but it's our home, and we put a lot of money in, and it may not look like it because we're not contractors, but we do what we can to fix this place up."
The decades-old building has long served as a special space for veterans but has faced challenges, including a break-in last year.
Sutton said this new roof is about more than repairs; it's about restoring community.
"We have a lot of veterans in this community that used to come to this post, and they always had functions here," Sutton said. "When my children were young, we had cookouts and parties and picnics and community events here, so hopefully, we'll be able to go back to having community events here to support the children, the people in this community."
