DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Homecoming weekend at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) begins this Friday, with several changes aimed at ensuring safety and managing crowds.

In light of overcrowding at the James E. Shepard Library Bowl and two separate shootings that injured four people last year, the campus will close at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. All music will end at 6:30 p.m. on both days.

On Saturday, game day, the Greek Bowl post-game celebration will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tailgating outside the enclosed RV lot on the practice field must end at 3:30 p.m.

"This is really the right move to make," said Dr. Delores Fogg, chapter president of the Raleigh-Wake NCCU Alumni chapter, in August. "People can come at any time because if you shorten the window, you have less time for issues to come about."

The changes come in the interest of safety.

Fogg is a retired educator and is in full support of this move, which she sees as an effort to create a safe environment.

"Safety is the main issue the chancellor is concerned about, and I applaud that. I know it's the right decision," she said.

Despite the changes, students and staff are excited.

"I'm feeling real amazing. It's been a great week so far," NCCU student Christian Clark said.

"Large gatherings, they're going to happen no matter what during this time of year," Wilson said. "I feel as though with here ... they've already had the rules in place. So, they kind of gave everyone their fair warning and told them what's going to be happening so there's no surprises. I feel safe," NCCU student Valdez Wilson told Eyewitness News.

Additionally, all campus buildings will be closed to visitors, with doors monitored and secured by designated security personnel.

If you're planning to visit NCCU this weekend, be sure to adjust your plans accordingly to comply with the new rules.
