Durham man sentenced to 40 years in 2023 double murder of teens

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Durham man has pleaded guilty to the 2023 shooting deaths of two high school students.

Jorge Raul Benitez-Mendoza, 21, was a Riverside High School student when he fatally shot Riverside student Angel Canales and Lakeview School student Osmar Banegas.

The two 16-year-old boys were found dead near Brogden Middle School in March 2023.

Benitez-Mendoza, who was 18 at the time of the shootings, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of murder.

He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
