FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (WTVD) -- As frustrations mount at DMV offices across North Carolina, officials are working to improve customer experience and staff burnout.
On Wednesday, DMV officials detailed how there has been some progress, such as reduced wait times and more DMV examiners ready to serve customers.
"DMV is currently developing its own detailed strategic plan, which is slated for release later this year," Vernon Utley, who's with the state auditor's office, said.
However, the number of office visits has increased by 7%, according to the NCDOT.
In a state audit, Fuquay-Varina is one of seven locations in Central North Carolina that officials said have the "greatest need for additional staff."
"I've been saying this for a while, but we just need more folks in there," Jean Dominguez said.
For Brittany Hudspeth she had to wait for months to make an appointment at the DMV.
"It's been stressful," Hudspeth said. "The closest appointment is in Winston-Salem, so it makes it very, very inconvenient."
State lawmakers have approved funding to help tackle some of these issues. The DMV hopes to have a strategic plan and staffing plan for the division by Dec. 1.
"I know that they're trying to do the best they can," Hudspeth said. "They're short-staffed and unfortunately, this is just the reality of it."
